Mallorca rent caps: MPs debate limits as towns wait
Inca and Manacor on Mallorca have asked to be classed as areas where rents can be controlled, but neither has succeeded. On Tuesday, the Balearic Parliament in Palma debates a Socialist Party (PSIB) bill that would allow limits on rents.
The sitting starts at 09.00. Opposition parties plan to question housing minister José Luis Mateo four times on housing, while Balearic president Marga Prohens will also face questions about the housing crisis.
Left-wing parties want to focus on rising rents, evictions and seasonal lets. Socialist spokesman Iago Negueruela says councils that want rent controls should be allowed to use them. He argues that rent increases are behind many evictions.
The People's Party (PP) and Vox have opposed rent caps, arguing that they do not work. Vox spokeswoman Manuela Cañadas also objects to the Spanish government's housing measures, which she says interfere with private property.
MPs have other business on Tuesday. They will consider a bill backed by every parliamentary group that would let spouses pass on the legally reserved share of an inheritance while alive. That option is currently available only between parents and children. Climate policy and a Més per Menorca motion against overcrowding are also on the agenda.
