Mallorca rent caps: new bid after towns turned down

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca’s towns of Inca and Manacor have tried and failed to gain powers to limit rents. On Tuesday, the Balearic Parliament in Palma debates a Socialist proposal to allow rent caps. The sitting starts at 09.00, with housing minister José Luis Mateo facing four questions from the opposition.

Inca and Manacor asked to be designated as areas under housing pressure, a step intended to open the way to rent limits. Socialist spokesman Iago Negueruela wants the Balearic government to let councils use the measure. He says rising rents are behind many evictions. The conservative People’s Party and Vox oppose caps, arguing that they do not work.

Balearic president Marga Prohens will also face questions about the housing crisis. Later, MPs will consider a bill backed by every parliamentary group that would allow spouses to pass on a compulsory share of an inheritance during their lifetimes. That option is currently limited to parents and children.
