Spain's rent decree missing as Friday vote nears

One of Spain’s two housing decrees is still missing from the official gazette on Wednesday 30 September, with Congress due to vote on housing measures on Friday. In Madrid, Spain, Health Minister and Más Madrid leader Mónica García says she expects Junts and the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) to back the government. Asked whether either party has agreed, she gives no confirmation.

The unpublished decree would extend rental contracts indefinitely. The other decree has already appeared in Spain’s Official State Gazette. García plays down the delay, saying legal drafting rules prevent the two linked texts from being published at the same time. United Left parliamentary spokesman Enrique Santiago, by contrast, wants the second decree published immediately.

García says Más Madrid has pressed the Socialist Party within the government to accept the measures and will now seek support from parliamentary groups. People’s Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has said his party will vote against both decrees. García argues that doing so would allow evictions and rent rises to continue. Friday’s vote will show whether the support she expects is there.
