Spain rent extension for 5 million faces Friday vote

Five million people in Spain: an automatic rent extension that Sumar says would benefit them faces a vote in Congress on Friday. The Spanish government approved two housing decrees in Madrid, Spain, on Tuesday, 29 September 2026. Congress is due to hold an extraordinary sitting to decide whether to approve them.

Rent extension split from other measures

Sumar wanted the extension of rental contracts in the decree containing the main housing measures. Its coalition partner, the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, insisted it go in a second decree. Social Rights Minister Pablo Bustinduy said talks ran through the night, with an agreement reached only at midday.

Sumar had also sought broader provisions for contracts expiring up to 2029 and stronger measures against evictions. It accepted tax breaks for landlords, despite doubting they would work, to help secure support in Congress.

Friday’s vote remains the hurdle

Bustinduy called the measures an important gain, while acknowledging that Sumar had not secured everything it wanted. The party says it will seek support for both decrees before Friday’s vote. Bustinduy warned that parties voting against them could face a political cost.
