Palma renters seek lease extensions before Friday vote

Palma, Mallorca: tenants with expiring rental contracts can get help on Thursday to request a rent extension before a Friday vote in Spain’s Congress of Deputies. The housing protest camp Acampada por la Vivienda de Mallorca will help them write burofaxes — messages sent with proof of receipt — to landlords and property funds. The extensions are set out in housing decrees due to face that vote.

The camp says tenants who send their requests in time could gain more time in their homes and greater legal certainty. It accuses Spain’s central government of pushing the measures through so close to parliamentary deadlines that families have little time to act. Whether the decrees will pass the vote remains uncertain.

The camp says the help with letters will not replace its protests. It plans further action on Saturday.
