Mallorca MP blasts vote blocking rent protections
Two housing decrees fail in Spain’s Congress of Deputies, leaving proposed eviction protection and rental contract extensions unpassed on Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands. On 2 October, Mallorca MP Vicenç Vidal of Sumar-MÉS blames the People’s Party (PP), Vox and Junts for the vote. He accuses them of acting “like sociopaths” towards families in hardship, according to a statement from MÉS per Mallorca.
One decree would have barred the eviction of vulnerable people and extended rental contracts due to expire this year. The other would have renewed contracts automatically and required landlords to pay tenants 12 months’ rent if they ended a contract.
Vidal voted for both decrees despite calling them inadequate. He also criticises the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) for not doing enough to defend the right to housing. For the Balearic Islands, he wants limits on home purchases by non-residents, arguing that people who live and work there cannot compete on equal terms with buyers who have more money to spend.
