Rent protests loom as union demands price caps

Street protests could follow if affordable rents are not secured, Spain’s Workers’ Commissions union, known as CCOO, has warned in Burgos on 25 September 2026. Its general secretary, Unai Sordo, called for social mobilisation around the government’s planned housing decree. He said unions and social groups would take the protest to the streets if access to housing at affordable prices is not guaranteed.

Sordo said the housing crisis cannot be solved with small fixes and needs firm action from every level of government. He wants rent prices capped, the spread of tourist flats curbed and evictions banned when no alternative home is available.

Union presses regions to act

The CCOO leader also called on Spain’s autonomous communities to use their powers on housing. He said investment funds should be pushed out of the housing market as part of structural action on the crisis.

Sordo spoke at an event marking 50 years since a historic clandestine union assembly held in the mid-1970s. He linked trade-union struggles under the dictatorship to what he described as the need to defend freedoms today against the rise of the far right and “Trumpism” in Europe and the wider West.
