Spain’s rent protests: minister urges action on housing
In Spain, rents are eating into wages: unions have called housing protests, and the housing minister says the authorities must act. Isabel Rodríguez told reporters in Madrid on Tuesday, 20 October, that she understood why workers wanted higher pay and lower rents. She said unions had a constitutional right to protest and should direct their demands to the authorities responsible.
Rodríguez said those authorities must take the demands seriously and make decisions. She pointed to the government’s creation of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda as one step already taken, but said further rules were needed.
Passing them will be difficult without a parliamentary majority. Congress rejected two government decree-laws in late September, prompting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to call an early general election for 29 November.
