In Palma, Mallorca, Marga Prohens says tax relief reached 26,000 renters across the Balearic Islands in 2025. An opposition MP says her government is failing tenants as rents rise. The Balearic Islands president made the claim in parliament on Tuesday, 27 October, in response to a question from Unidas Podemos MP José María García.

Prohens said her government had raised the maximum tax deduction for renters from 440 euros to 550 euros and removed some eligibility requirements. Before those changes, she said, the deduction reached 7,000 renters at a cost of three million euros. In 2025, she put the figures at 26,000 renters and 14.6 million euros.

She also said the wait for rental aid payments had fallen from two years to one, and pointed to tax deductions for landlords who freeze rents.

García accused the government of siding with landlords and said rents were rising much faster than under the previous administration. Prohens replied that her government backed both renters and small landlords, and accused García of setting them against each other.
