Mallorca rental cap: minister urges Balearics action
A rental cap could cover Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands if Marga Prohens changes course, Housing Minister Isabel Rodríguez said in Eivissa, Ibiza, on 16 September. Rodríguez urged the regional president to freeze rents, saying the islands already have the power to do so. She called Ibiza's housing situation an absolute emergency.
Speaking at a Socialist Party event, Rodríguez said the Spanish government could do much to tackle the housing crisis but needed the backing of the Balearic government. She said measures working in other Spanish regions had yet to deliver results on the islands.
Housing law and planning challenge
Rodríguez pointed to Spain's national housing law, which allows for an affordable public housing stock to be built. She also accused the Balearic government of giving foreign investors preferential treatment.
The minister backed the Socialist Party's legal challenge to the Balearic planning rules. She said the rules were unacceptable because they allow construction on rural land.
Sánchez sets out 2027 rental pledge
Rosario Sánchez, the Socialist candidate for the 2027 Balearic government election, said she would declare the islands stressed housing areas if elected. That official designation would allow rents to be limited. She also promised priority for island residents when buying property.
Rodríguez said building work on homes at Ca n'Escandell could start in 2027. The site development work is already well advanced and could be finished in December.
