Mallorca teen held after rental car escape in s'Arenal

A teenager allegedly took an unattended rental car in s'Arenal in Llucmajor during the early hours of Saturday 19 September, then tried to escape the Guardia Civil on foot. Officers caught him after he climbed several walls, the force said. The car had been left with its engine running and was returned undamaged to the hire company.

Car found with engine still running

A Guardia Civil patrol from Llucmajor spotted the car coming towards it while being driven erratically and repeatedly flashing its lights. Officers turned around to stop it, but the driver made an evasive move into the car park of a local business.

They found the rental car abandoned with the engine still running. The driver was hiding behind rubbish containers, then ran when officers told him to stop.

Teen released to legal guardian

The Guardia Civil said later checks showed the car had been taken that same night from a busy part of s'Arenal after being left running without anyone watching it.

The teenager did not hold a licence to drive motor vehicles. Officers notified the prosecutor's office for minors over suspected unauthorised use of a vehicle, an offence against road safety and serious disobedience of officers. He was later released and handed to his legal guardian.
