Spain rental contracts: Sumar seeks automatic renewal
Madrid: Sumar wants rental contracts to renew automatically and is negotiating with the PSOE over a housing decree that could go before Spain’s cabinet on Tuesday. Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun said on Monday, 28 September, that he hoped the parties would reach a deal. None has been announced.
Sumar also wants extensions of existing rental contracts to take effect immediately, alongside rules for seasonal lets and rooms rented out separately. Urtasun told Spanish broadcaster TVE that his party had pushed for such changes before but had not been able to get them through.
Housing protests have been under way in Madrid since Saturday, and a camp in Puerta del Sol has entered its second night. Urtasun said pressure from the protests had brought the government close to an agreement. The next test is Tuesday’s cabinet meeting.
