Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands face a sharp rise in respiratory infections: the rate hits 397 cases per 100,000 people between 21 and 27 September, up 33% on the previous week. That puts the islands close to the epidemic threshold. The Carlos III Health Institute published the figures on Thursday, 1 October 2026.

It is the highest rate for that week of the year in four years. Infections involving the virus that causes Covid-19, along with bronchitis, saw the biggest increases, according to the institute’s respiratory infection surveillance report.

Across Spain, the rate rose 28.2% to 478.2 cases per 100,000 people. The report describes the current intensity as “low”. Its figure of 445.6 cases per 100,000 people for the same week last year covers Spain as a whole, not the Balearics; Spain had reached the epidemic phase then.
