Mallorca sinkhole shuts two lanes towards Paseo Marítimo
A sinkhole on Avenida Gabriel Alomar in Palma de Mallorca shuts two lanes towards Paseo Marítimo on Wednesday, 7 October. The hole is near the military barracks. Six bus routes are taking diversions.
The damage began with a broken drinking-water pipe beneath the pavement near number 16. The fault was spotted shortly after 22.00 on Tuesday, and workers from the municipal water company Emaya began repairs. At around 10.30 on Wednesday, Palma City Council said the pipe had been fixed. Nearby homes had seen little disruption to their water supply, which is now back to normal.
The road remains the problem. Workers have put in two load-bearing plates to strengthen it and help prevent similar damage. The council says they are working to reopen the lanes as soon as possible.
Bus routes 25, 35, A1 to the airport, 23, 19 and 31 are diverted via Carrer de Manacor, Carrer de Joan Alcover and Carrer de Joan Maragall. A temporary stop has been set up at stop 459 on Joan Maragall.
