Mallorca pupils clear 431 kilos of rubbish in Magaluf
On Mallorca, 70 pupils and four teachers collect 431 kilos of rubbish from a protected wetland in Magaluf, in the municipality of Calvià, on Friday, 16 October. They come from schools in Bendinat and Son Ferrer.
The wetland is designated a critical biological area and is home to endemic Limonium plants. The Balearic Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment takes part in the clean-up. Its species protection service also talks to the pupils about how waste can affect wildlife and plants.
The work is part of a joint environmental day across the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Occitania, linked to the Let’s Clean Up Europe programme. The programme encourages people to reduce waste, reuse materials and recycle. Activities also take place at Salencar de Barruera in Lleida and L’Étang de Bages in France. All three sites are vulnerable, protected wetlands important for plants and birds.
The schools involved plan to meet online to assess the rubbish collected, share their experiences and compare what worked at each site.
