Ibiza: Over five tonnes of rubbish cleared from plot

A clean-up removes more than five tonnes of rubbish from a private plot in Cala Mestella, in Santa Eulària des Riu on Ibiza. The waste posed a fire risk and could contaminate the soil. Santa Eulària des Riu council reported the clearance on 31 October.

The plot is unoccupied now, but the council says the rubbish was left after earlier occupations. Bicycles, electrical appliances, mattresses, tables, suitcases and pans were among the items scattered across it. Officers from the Local Police’s Preventive Action Group oversaw the work.

Because the land is privately owned, officers first formally asked the owner to clear it. The owner agreed to pay, and the council hired a specialist firm to do the work. The council says it continues to monitor sites used as settlements in the past to prevent new occupations.
