Mallorca: Llucmajor rubbish collection falters for two days
In Llucmajor, Mallorca, numerous streets go two days without a proper rubbish collection, local party Llibertat Llucmajor says on 27 October 2026. The new eight-year contract has started with the same problems as the old one, the party says. It wants more collection lorries and more frequent pick-ups.
Changes ahead for bins and collections
Door-to-door collections are due in residential developments, while bins in s'Arenal, Mallorca, are to get electronic keys in a few months. Llibertat Llucmajor says there are already too few lorries to carry out the collection plan. It fears the changes could make matters worse without more vehicles and collections. The party says it was the only group to vote against the contract and now wants it changed.
Party questions gap in rubbish fees
The party says the contract costs about €5.5 million a year, while residents pay about €7.5 million a year in rubbish fees. It wants Llucmajor council to explain what the roughly €2 million difference covers.
The party points to Spanish local finance law, under which fee income must not exceed the service’s real or expected costs overall, including allowable direct and indirect costs. If the difference cannot be accounted for as a service cost, it says, the fees would breach that limit. Its spokesperson, Alexandro Gaffar, wants any money the party considers surplus put towards improving the service through the proper legal channels.
