Menorca school nears finish with room for 450

A new school in Es Mercadal, Menorca, is nearing completion and will have places for 450 pupils. Sa Fontassa is being built to take pupils from Mare de Déu del Toro, where 259 pupils are enrolled this school year and space has been tight for years.

Education and Universities Minister Antoni Vera visited the site on Tuesday. The Balearic Government is spending €8.39 million on the 3,636-square-metre building, the ministry said.

Sa Fontassa will be a two-form-entry school, with six early-years classrooms and 12 primary classrooms. It will also include a specialist education unit within the mainstream school and further supporting spaces.

Mare de Déu del Toro currently has only one class group per year. Once building work ends, the Ministry of Education and Universities will lead the move to Sa Fontassa alongside Es Mercadal Town Hall and the existing school community.

Elsewhere on Menorca, the new integrated vocational training centre in Ciutadella is due to open when the 2026-2027 vocational training year starts on Monday 21 September. It will focus on hotel and tourism courses.

Other education projects underway include refurbishment of the sports hall at Maria Àngels Cardona secondary school, plans for CEPA Joan Mir i Mir adult education centre, a future new home for the Maó Conservatory, and work on the façades, roofs and windows at Josep Maria Quadrado secondary school. More than €75,000 was spent on smaller school repairs across Menorca over the past year, according to the ministry.
