A new school for 450 pupils in Es Mercadal, Menorca, could take in children from Verge del Toro after the Christmas holidays. The local council and the Balearic Islands government are working towards that start for Sa Fontassa, the People’s Party in Menorca said on Wednesday, 14 October. It gave no firm opening date.

Balearic Islands education minister Antoni Vera visited the building works on Tuesday. The new school represents an investment of 8.39 million euros and will have a built area of 3,636 square metres.

It will have two streams, with six classrooms for younger children, 12 primary classrooms and a special education unit within the mainstream school.

Work at other Menorca schools

The People’s Party also pointed to the opening of a new vocational training centre in Ciutadella. In Maó, repairs to the playground at Antoni Juan Alemany school have been completed at a cost of 76,912 euros.

The party said work to provide dining rooms at schools across the island was complete, as were repairs to the air conditioning in an annex of the Josep Maria Quadrado institute. Construction of a vocational training centre in Es Castell is under way, while a design competition continues for a new home for Menorca’s music and dance conservatory.

Town councils across Menorca are also carrying out agreements with the regional education department worth 2.6 million euros to improve local school facilities, the party said.
