Mallorca’s Sa Mola tunnel could close for €7m repairs

Mallorca’s Sa Mola tunnel in Port de Sóller faces partial closures, and a full closure is possible, during a €7 million safety overhaul. The Mallorca Island Council approved the final plan on 30 October 2026, with work expected to start in the first quarter of 2027. Around 4,000 vehicles use each lane of the nearly 1.3-kilometre tunnel on the Ma-11 every day.

Why the tunnel needs work

The tunnel shows signs of wear. Crews will replace damaged lining, repair cracks and waterproof the structure to stop leaks damaging its equipment. The road surface, signs and protective fittings will also be renewed.

Electrical equipment, ventilation, lighting and fire detection are due for an upgrade. The plan includes changes to a protective barrier to lessen the consequences of a collision for vehicle occupants. Work near the tunnel entrances will aim to reduce traffic noise.

Closures and the way around

The council expects partial closures and has not ruled out closing all lanes for short periods. If the tunnel shuts, traffic between Sóller and Port de Sóller would use the old access road, the Ma-11B.

The contract is due to go out to tender on Saturday. The project has a 15-month schedule, but work will pause from 1 June to 30 September to avoid adding to peak-season traffic. That leaves around 11 months of actual work.
