Three Sahrawis killed: Palma committee condemns attack

Three Sahrawis were killed in a Moroccan attack in June. On Thursday, the Social Affairs Committee of the Parliament of the Balearic Islands in Palma condemned their deaths. One of those killed was Lehbib Mohamed Abdelaziz, a member of the Frente Polisario National Secretariat and son of former Sahrawi president Mohamed Abdelaziz.

The motion came from the Peace and Freedom in the Sahara intergroup, made up of UP, Més per Menorca, MÉS per Mallorca, the Socialists and the Popular Party. Every group backed it except Vox, which abstained.

Call for a peaceful Western Sahara settlement

The committee renewed the chamber’s support for a peaceful, negotiated solution in Western Sahara that respects human rights. It also underlined its backing for international law and the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination under United Nations resolutions.

The Parliament of the Balearic Islands called on international institutions to step up diplomatic and political work towards a peaceful, fair, lasting and mutually acceptable settlement within the United Nations framework.

Push to link care and disability status

The Popular Party also won backing for a separate motion on care dependency and disability status. It asks Spain’s government to ensure that planned legal changes make the equivalence between the two ratings work in practice, without duplicate administrative procedures.

Madrid is also asked to examine legal options so that recognition of permanent dependency makes it easier to access rights linked to reduced mobility and related benefits. Any expansion of rights or changes to care-system benefits should be backed by an adequate financial assessment and stable funding in line with the real cost of services.
