One day before Spain’s coalition deadline: Pedro Sánchez keeps a joint left-wing bid for the Senate in play. Speaking in Brussels on Thursday, 15 October, the prime minister says his Socialist Party (PSOE) could stand with other left-wing parties. He is there for a meeting of the European Council.

Sánchez wants his party to win both chambers of parliament. The Socialists have been looking at joint Senate lists in most constituencies, hoping to take control from the People’s Party (PP). The party led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo has held an absolute majority in the Senate during the current parliamentary term.

A separate decision rests with Frente Amplio and Podemos: whether to stand together in the general election. Sánchez says he respects their independence. They, too, have until Friday to agree an electoral coalition.
