Palma honours Sancus case staff with medals and diplomas

Palma has awarded medals and diplomas to municipal officials caught up in court proceedings linked to the Sancus case. The ceremony took place on Thursday at the Sant Ferran police barracks, led by mayor Jaime Martínez Llabrés. Miquel Estarellas and Biel Torres were also honoured posthumously.

The awards were proposed by the Associació de Víctimes per Arbitrarietats Judicials (JAVA), an association for victims of judicial arbitrariness. They recognise the professional dignity and careers of those affected.

Palma Local Police chief Guillem Mascaró opened the event. Antonio Vera Martínez and Pedro Torres then spoke for JAVA before the medals and diplomas were presented.

The city’s recognition follows municipal council agreements reached in July 2023 and March 2025.

Martínez said even the most sincere tribute could not erase the anguish, suffering or emotional, psychological and physical harm endured by those affected. But he said the ceremony was needed as a sign of respect, redress and commitment to their memory and dignity.

The mayor also recalled a pledge he made at the first Palma Local Police Day he chaired in 2023: to make every effort to restore the force as a leading security body. He said officers must have the resources needed for their work and firm backing from those in government. Palma’s municipal music band also took part in the ceremony.
