Mallorca coast: plan tackles sand loss and flooding

Sand loss, flooding and coastal erosion in Mallorca’s Bay of Alcúdia are to be investigated under a new joint protocol launched on Thursday, 24 September. Hotel trade groups from Alcúdia, Can Picafort and Playa de Muro joined scientists, businesses and public authorities in presenting the plan. The Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle said it is intended to protect a coastal area that is a major driver of Mallorca’s tourism.

The partners want one coordinated response to the environmental, land-use and economic pressures facing the bay. They also discussed coastal planning, adapting to climate change, cooperation between authorities and keeping money available for agreed studies and projects.

Scientists to examine the coastline

A technical working group bringing together every signing body will look into why the coastline is retreating and why sediment is out of balance. It will also examine where sand is building up and rank the action needed.

Alcúdia mayor Fina Linares said decisions must be based on scientific knowledge of the whole area. Neither the cause of the problems nor the answer should be assumed before the studies are completed, she said.

Plan will set out responsibility and funding

The group will draw up medium- and long-term plans, identify which authorities are responsible for each project and establish the procedures required. It will also seek funding routes and monitor the measures that are agreed.

Juan Manuel Lafuente, the minister responsible, said a proposed law on coastal planning, protection and management could reduce the fragmented way the coast is run. Tourism minister Jaume Bauzà said protecting the beach and coastline of the Bay of Alcúdia was also vital to safeguarding the local economy and jobs in Alcúdia, Muro and Santa Margalida.
