Palma, Mallorca: A court orders a shelved case over a Sant Sebastià celebrations poster reopened, and Podemos backs its illustrator on Thursday, 15 October. The Balearic Islands Provincial Court has upheld an appeal by Abogados Cristianos. Lucía Muñoz, Podemos’s Balearic Islands coordinator, says she still supports illustrator Lluïsa Febrer and her freedom to create art.

According to Podemos, the poster was intended to promote a queer party and show a more campaigning side of Sant Sebastià. Muñoz argues that the saint is not only a religious figure: for centuries, his image has also been linked to erotic art and the LGBTQIA+ community. She points to the cover of La bola negra, a film by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, as another use of Sant Sebastià imagery.

The case had previously been closed. Muñoz says it is troubling to see the poster return to court and that her support for Febrer has not changed.
