Mallorca faces strong showers and Saturday storms

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca faces strong showers and thunderstorms on Saturday: heavy rain could bring sudden flooding to low-lying ground. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, expects storms across the Balearic Islands. Spain’s Civil Protection service is also maintaining an alert for very heavy, persistent showers and storms in the east of the mainland.

Why the storms are building

The unsettled weather began on Thursday as cold air higher in the atmosphere met moisture from the Mediterranean. Aemet says the east and north-east of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands are particularly affected.

On Sunday, an isolated area of low pressure high in the atmosphere is expected to form west of the mainland. It could keep the unsettled weather going at least until 4 October. Aemet says it is still uncertain where the heaviest rain will fall and advises people to check updated forecasts and warnings.

What to watch for in heavy rain

Downpours could cause sudden local flooding in low-lying areas and watercourses. Civil Protection says drivers should slow down, avoid stopping where water could gather and use main roads and motorways where possible. It warns people not to cross flooded stretches on foot or by car.

The service also warns against sheltering under trees during a storm outdoors, or standing near fences and metal objects.
