Mallorca school absences: MPs demand early action
Mallorca school absences prompt a unanimous call for earlier action: the Balearic parliament’s education committee in Palma, Mallorca, urges the regional government on Thursday, 1 October, to improve how it spots and prevents pupils missing school. The call comes in a non-binding motion put forward by PP member Maite Torrens.
Spotting absences and helping families
The committee wants schools, municipal social services, the Balearic Ministry of Education and Universities and state security forces to work more closely so they can identify absences sooner. It also calls for greater recognition of the work of school counsellors and social educators.
The motion asks the government to run campaigns for families, publish up-to-date figures and draw up local plans suited to each area.
Schools face a separate heat debate
The committee also backed most of a proposal from MÉS per Mallorca member Marta Carrió on adapting schools to high temperatures. It calls for better insulation, green roofs, solar panels and less asphalt, alongside funding for school improvements, fair access across areas and social groups, and rules for physical activity during extreme heat.
PP and Vox opposed one part of the proposal, defeating a plan to make schools community heat refuges. A tied vote on a separate proposal for an urgent plan to improve conditions for pupils and staff means that decision now goes to the full parliament.
