Palma school air-con fight puts Vox under fire

Pupils, teachers and other staff endure heat in Palma schools from April to October, the Unión Obrera Balear (UOB) union says. On Friday, it accused Vox of cynicism for opposing air conditioning in educational centres while working from Palma City Hall, which has air conditioning. The union called that position insulting.

The dispute centres on comments by Luis Acosta, a Vox councillor at Palma City Hall. He argued for a “culture of effort” and said earlier generations studied without air conditioning.

UOB called that a very poor reason to reject cooling systems in schools and institutes. It said Vox objects to teachers’ academic freedom, sex education, work on ethical values and pupils learning Catalan, yet accepts that students and staff have to endure the heat.

The union also criticised the Balearic Islands Ministry of Education and Universities for moving too slowly to fit air conditioning in schools across the islands. It urged teachers to keep reporting poor thermal conditions and to maintain pressure on the authorities.
