Palma school assistants demand 12-month contracts

School assistants in Palma will gather outside the Department of Education and Universities at 10am on Tuesday, 8 September, demanding decent conditions and recognition for their work in schools. The auxiliary technical education staff, known as ATE, want their role to be reclassified and their educational work recognised. CSIF is backing the protest, alongside CCOO, STEI, UGT, ANPE and USO.

The unions also call for training that matches the responsibilities the assistants take on. They want staff assigned to a single school, saying this would bring greater job stability, help work-life balance and give them equal access to transfer competitions.

Contracts and stable posts

The ATE are demanding 12-month contracts, an end to contracts based on special circumstances and the creation of structural posts for stable support. They also want a danger allowance.

Staff aged 55 and over want their duties adapted within working hours.

Support for pupils

The works committee says the dispute reaches beyond staff terms and conditions. It says the demands directly affect the quality of educational and care support received by pupils with specific needs.
