Balearics school buses: Parliament seeks cost help

School outings across the Balearics face rising coach prices and a shortage of available vehicles. On Thursday in Palma, the Education and Universities Committee of the Balearic Parliament backed a call for the Balearic Government to help bring down school transport costs. The move follows complaints that current fares have become disproportionate as prices keep climbing, especially in peak season.

The proposal was put forward by MÉS per Mallorca MP Maria Ramon. She said educational needs must not be placed below the interests of the tourism market.

Two bus measures go to full Parliament

Two key measures ended in a tied vote and will now go before the full Parliament: a regulated fare specifically for school transport and a minimum share of vehicles for educational centres.

Lawmakers also want an early-planning system and protected calendar for school outings, so transport remains available during periods of high demand. The proposal calls on the Government to strengthen and adapt regular public transport for educational needs, and to recognise that activities outside the classroom form part of the right to education.

More action against bullying

The committee also approved every point in a separate proposal from PP MP Marta Pereira on preventing and responding to bullying and cyberbullying.

It calls for wider awareness, prevention and early-detection programmes across the education community, with an emphasis on speaking up early and seeking help when there are signs of bullying. The Government is also urged to provide ongoing, specialist training for teachers, school leadership teams and guidance staff.

The proposal seeks consistent use of existing protocols in every Balearic school, stronger psychological and socio-educational support, and a review of how bullying cases are handled.
