Mallorca schools face too many pupils per teacher

Mallorca’s public schools face too many pupils per teacher, too few resources and problems with their buildings: a Balearic teachers’ union says the public education system is in a “critical” state. In a statement on Monday, 19 October 2026, the education branch of the Balearic Workers’ Union (UOB) also described the system as “precarious” and teachers’ pay as inadequate.

The union backs teachers on strike in Catalonia, the Valencian Community and Madrid. It accuses politicians of allowing public schools to deteriorate over the years and calls on society to defend them.

UOB also condemns what it alleges was police brutality against teachers at demonstrations. It wants teachers to organise in defence of their rights and build a campaign they can sustain over time.
