Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, could see another year of free school fruit, vegetables and milk: a new supply tender moves ahead after 59% of the fruit handed out last year came from the islands. The board of the Balearic Agricultural and Fisheries Guarantee Fund, known as Fogaiba, approved the tender process on Thursday, 5 November. It is intended to cover participating schools on Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera in 2026-2027.

Fruit reached 77,785 children

In 2025-2026, the fruit scheme reached 77,785 children at 273 schools on Mallorca and Menorca. Of the 92,433 kilograms distributed, 54,580 kilograms came from the Balearics.

Milk was a different story. No suppliers bid for the milk contracts or the fruit deliveries to Eivissa and Formentera. The new tender includes them again.

What the new contracts require

Suppliers who win contracts must spend at least 10% of their food purchasing budget on local produce and another 10% on certified organic products. Bids offering at least 15% local produce or 15% organic products can earn extra points. Short supply chains also count in the selection.

The tender has eight contracts for fruit and vegetables and four for milk and dairy products. It has a budget of €667,186 and is aimed at children in the second cycle of pre-school education and in primary school at participating schools. Depending on the winning bids, each child is due between three and ten deliveries per type of supply.
