Mallorca school heat: families demand cooler classrooms

Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands: families and headteachers say school heat can make learning harder and want classrooms cooled. On 29 September 2026, the Federation of Pupils’ Families Associations in Mallorca (FAPA Mallorca) and the Mallorca Association of Nursery and Primary Headteachers (Adipma) call for practical measures. Their demand follows a Palma councillor’s vote against a classroom air-conditioning proposal last week.

A vote over classroom heat

Vox councillor Luis Acosta said he believed in a “culture of effort” when he voted against the proposal. The families and headteachers reject the idea that pupils should have to endure excessive heat to show effort. They say children need conditions in which they can learn.

The groups say research indicates that high temperatures during school days can harm learning, while better classroom conditions can reduce the impact. They also describe the heat as a health issue for pupils and teachers.

Families want action beyond fans

FAPA Mallorca says families had already asked the Balearic Islands Department of Education and Universities for effective steps, including air-conditioned classrooms, at their latest meeting. It now wants quicker measures alongside larger projects, reaching every school that needs them.

Schools should not have to rely on families being able to buy fans, the federation says. It is calling on local councils, including Palma City Council, and the education department to work together on a fair plan rather than pass responsibility back and forth.
