Mallorca gains 190 school places as Formentera starts term

Palma, Mallorca, has 190 extra school places as IES ses Estacions opens a new extension for the 2026-2027 year on Thursday, 10 September. The €2.8 million building includes rooms for vocational courses and a multi-purpose classroom. On Formentera, 1,238 pupils have begun classes, where Balearic president Marga Prohens formally opened the school year at CEIP Sant Ferran de ses Roques.

Prohens visited the school with Education and Universities Minister Antoni Vera and Formentera Council president Óscar Portas. They later went to CEIP Mestre Lluís Andreu and Colegio Virgen Milagrosa.

More staff and rooms on Formentera

Formentera’s schools have 165 teachers this year, 18 more than in 2022-2023. There are also 36 specialists supporting pupils with additional needs.

Teachers taking posts that are particularly difficult to fill on the island will continue to receive a €400 monthly supplement. The Balearic Government also plans to build 40 homes in an effort to make it easier for teachers to stay on Formentera.

At IES Marc Ferrer, an extension with six classrooms and two workshops has entered use after an investment of just over €2 million. A €603,419-plus expansion of CEIP El Pilar is out to tender, while plans are being drawn up for a €445,000 refurbishment of CEIP Mestre Lluís Andreu in Sant Francesc Xavier.

More space across Mallorca

Elsewhere on Mallorca, IES Sant Marçal has opened an extension costing just over €6 million. Its eight new Bachillerato units and four ESO units lift the school’s capacity from 480 to 880 places.

CEIP Jaume I in Palma has also added places for early-years education. Across the Balearics, public-school staffing has risen by 198 teachers to 14,375, alongside 39 more specialists for pupils needing additional support.
