The Balearic Government has reminded families in Palma, Mallorca, on 23 August to keep invoices or equivalent documents for school textbooks in order to claim the school textbook tax deduction. It normally covers the full cost, up to €220 for each child.

The ceiling rises to €350 per child for qualifying taxpayers under 30, people with disabilities, large families, single-parent families and certain self-employed workers. The Ministry of Economy, Finance and Innovation said the deduction was among those with the greatest impact in the latest income-tax campaign.

In the 2024 tax year, 37,624 taxpayers used the measure, saving €5.9 million in total. That represented a 30.1% rise in claimants and a 38.5% increase in savings compared with 2022.

Childcare and education expenses

A separate deduction covers childcare-related spending for children or foster children under six. The standard rate is 40% of eligible costs, capped at €660 a year; qualifying taxpayers under 36, people with disabilities, large and single-parent families, and certain self-employed workers can claim 50%, up to €900.

Eligible costs include nursery schools and childcare for children aged up to three, as well as supervision, meals and extracurricular activities at educational centres for those aged three to six. Employing a registered carer may also qualify. In 2024, 12,209 taxpayers claimed this deduction, saving €3.6 million, with claimant numbers up 43.8% on 2022.

Families whose children must move to another island for university, higher artistic education, higher vocational training or other higher education may claim up to €1,800 per eligible child. Foreign-language classes outside school hours between September and June can qualify for 15% relief, capped at €110 per child.

Housing and inter-island travel

Professionals, including teachers, appointed to posts classed as difficult or very difficult to fill may deduct costs linked to buying, building or renting a home. Their eligible expenses can also include air or sea travel between islands.
