On Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, 35 education centres now belong to a weather-station network that reaches every island: a centre on Formentera has joined. The Balearic Ministry of Education and Universities announced the expansion on Monday, 2 November 2026. XarMet, as the school network is called, also has eight centres on Menorca and eight on Ibiza.

Local weather readings for lessons

The stations record temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind and solar radiation. Pupils can use readings from their own surroundings to investigate environmental changes and develop science projects.

The network began this year with 20 centres. Another 32 joined during the 2026–2027 school year, bringing the total to 52. The new participants include seven state-subsidised schools and the Balearic Higher School of Design.

Teachers prepare to use the data

Teachers receive 18 hours of training between October and December. It combines online sessions, meetings on Mallorca, Menorca and the Pityusic Islands, and work through a learning platform. The University of the Balearic Islands also advises centres on installing, setting up and maintaining their stations.

The centres are due to take part in Ciencia per Tothom 2027, where pupils can present work based on the weather readings.
