Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca's sea is the focus in Palma, Mallorca, this Thursday: 11 experts and researchers are working out shared criteria for what to restore in Balearic waters, how, where and with whom. The talks open the first session of the third series of meetings on conserving Balearic marine life, the Marilles Foundation says. Its director, Pablo Rodríguez, says conservation starts with sharing knowledge and reaching agreement before taking action.

What could be restored

Researcher Margalida Monserrat has presented a guide to restoring the Balearic Sea. Emma Cebrian has explained how a plan to restore Catalonia's marine ecosystems works. Other talks cover the national restoration plan and work on Cymodocea, forests and microalgae.

From examples to proposals

A discussion of practical projects will include Cabalga and work in Portocolom and Pollença, both on Mallorca, and on Menorca. After a debate among attendees, the experts will meet behind closed doors this afternoon to write up their conclusions and management proposals for the relevant authorities.

The next session, on 29 October, will focus on invasive species. Sustainable fishing follows on 5 November.
