Sant Josep de sa Talaia on Ibiza is putting seagrass back on its beaches: the council begins the work on Tuesday, 27 October, to help protect the coast from winter storms. The marine plant, known as posidonia, was removed at the start of the tourist season.

The council says the work will happen in stages. Seagrass will go first to quieter stretches of coast and beaches by businesses that have already closed. It will always return to the beach it came from. The council also wants to recover any sand that may have been taken away during cleaning.

In the Bay of Portmany, the council is working with fishermen to minimise disruption to their work. No seagrass will be returned to Port des Torrent or Punta Xinxó. Where returns are compatible with fishing, the council and fishermen will agree how to carry them out. Seagrass removed from Punta Xinxó will instead be mixed with sand.
