Mallorca housing: firms demand homes for seasonal workers

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca’s peak-season workers need somewhere to stay: the island’s small-business federation wants Vox to back new homes for them. The Federation of Small and Medium-Sized Businesses of Mallorca (Pimem) made the call at a meeting with Vox candidates for Spain’s general election on 6 November. It also asked Maribel Cerezo, the party’s lead Balearic candidate for Spain’s Congress, to support a law that helps small firms grow.

Homes for workers

Pimem wants more housing built on Mallorca, including homes for workers who come to the island during the high season. It is calling for more state funding for subsidised housing, with the Balearic government and local councils involved, and for state-owned land to be made available for workers’ homes.

The federation also wants tax measures that favour letting homes to residents rather than tourists. It says empty properties should be brought onto the residential market and that cooperation between the public and private sectors is essential.

Easier growth for small firms

Pimem wants the proposed law to cut administrative and regulatory hurdles, encourage investment and reinvestment, and improve access to finance. It also wants support for innovation and professional management, as well as easier mergers, acquisitions and business partnerships.

One concern is what happens when a company grows beyond 50 employees. Pimem wants the rules reviewed so that taking on more staff does not trigger a sudden jump in legal obligations. It has also asked Vox to seek extra funding for the Balearic Islands that reflects island costs, tourism pressure and the high cost of living.
