Mallorca: second-home purchase limits under review
The Balearic Government is weighing limits on second-home purchases by non-residents, including on Mallorca, if it finds the proposed measures work.
Antoni Costa, the regional government spokesperson and Minister for Economy, Finance and Innovation, set out the position in Palma de Mallorca on Friday, 11 September, after the Consell de Govern meeting. The measures are part of a European Commission housing law proposal.
Costa said an outright ban on purchases by non-residents cannot currently be imposed. But Brussels is opening the way for administrations to create rules that could allow such limits.
The government will now examine the proposed text in detail. Costa said it still has a long way to go before becoming law, and said any measure would be considered only if it made it easier for people from the Balearics to access housing.
He also pointed to a measure already in force: the ban on new homes being put to tourist use. Whether limits on second-home purchases follow will depend on the government's assessment of the European proposal.
