Ibiza's Can Misses secures second MRI for 2027

Hospital Can Misses in Eivissa is due to receive a second magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner in the first four months of 2027. The Balearic Government has approved the investment, and the Eivissa and Formentera Health Area has started the buying process.

An initial €1.3 million has been set aside for the 1.5 Tesla scanner and its installation in a 150-square-metre area. Health councillor Manuela García visited the proposed site on Thursday.

The scanner uses a powerful magnet and radio waves to produce detailed images from inside the body without ionising radiation, according to the Health Ministry. It can be used to detect, assess or monitor conditions including musculoskeletal injuries, neurological illnesses and tumours.

Can Misses carried out 3,523 MRI examinations in the first half of this year, from a total of 5,258. The Health Area says demand for the tests means it needs outside support alongside the hospital's own work.

E-Diagnostic Clínica Virtual de Especialidades, a Barcelona company, reported on 1,138 examinations. Policlínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario carried out and reported on a further 597. Agreements with both providers remain in force while Can Misses awaits the new scanner.
