Mallorca’s three senators won’t run again for Senate

Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, has three sitting senators, and none is standing for another Senate term at the 29 November general election. María Salom and Martí Ángel Torres of the People’s Party, and Pere Joan Pons of the Socialist Party, are all absent from the provisional Senate candidate lists published by Spain’s official state gazette.

Across the Balearic Islands, just one of six sitting senators is standing again for the chamber. Menorca’s Cristóbal Marqués is not running for another Senate term. Juanjo Ferrer is standing again, but only for Ibiza. He previously represented Ibiza and Formentera together; a reform gives Formentera its own senator.

The change reaches beyond the islands. Almost half of Spain’s elected senators from the current term are not on the new Senate lists, though some are standing for the lower house instead.
