Balearics get Senate forum date as Ceuta is considered
The Balearic Government is invited to a Senate meeting in Madrid on 1 October, alongside every other regional administration and Spain’s central government. The forum could take up the situation in Ceuta after the mass arrival of migrants at the end of July, although its final agenda has not yet been set. The People’s Party, which has an overall majority in the Senate, has convened the meeting.
The General Commission of the Autonomous Communities is the only place in Spain’s parliament where the central government, regional governments and senators can debate together. It also permits the use of Spain’s co-official languages, whose use is otherwise tightly restricted in the Senate.
Parliamentary groups must now put forward resolutions for the session. More than 30 initiatives are already awaiting action, including a request for Ángel Víctor Torres, the Territorial Policy Minister and the government’s single lead for Ceuta, to explain his department’s plans.
Other pending proposals cover Morocco’s maritime areas, the AP-9, regional financing and rail infrastructure in León. Requests are also outstanding for appearances by Madrid’s central government delegate, Francisco Martín Aguirre, and UNED professor María Antonia Monés Farré.
