Spain heat: September runs more than 4ºC above average

September heat is pushing average temperatures more than +4ºC above normal across large parts of Spain, figures to 13 September show. Weather portal Eltiempo.es says the spell may yet be classed as a heatwave. If confirmed, it would be the fifth recorded in a September since records began.

The country’s highest temperature of 2026 so far came on 3 September at El Granado in Huelva, where the thermometer reached 45,7ºC. It was also a September record for the station.

Records spread from Huelva to Barcelona

The exceptional readings have not been confined to the south. Zaragoza Airport reached 39,3ºC, its highest figure in more than 80 years of data.

At Barcelona - Fabra, the temperature climbed to 35,5ºC — +2,5ºC above the station’s previous September record across 106 years of records. The site also recorded a night above 25ºC in September for the first time.

Above-normal warmth is set to continue

Eltiempo.es says day and night records have also been logged in parts of eastern, central, southern and northern Spain. At Puerto de Navacerrada, average temperatures were running +6,5ºC above normal up to 13 September.

Forecasts suggest the gap from normal may narrow, but temperatures are still expected to remain several degrees above the seasonal level. The portal says September could finish extremely warm unless a marked cold spell arrives, adding that this month’s heat goes beyond what is usual for the time of year.
