Sewage and dead rats foul Ibiza shore after heavy rain
The shore at Cala de Bou on Ibiza is littered with wet wipes, organic waste and dead rats after heavy rain over the weekend. Residents on the south side of the bay have sent photos and videos to local group Salvem Sa Badia de Portmany, which reported the damage on 6 October. The group says several stretches of coast smell strongly after rainwater mixed with sewage overflowed from manholes near pumping stations.
The stations send wastewater to a treatment plant. But the group says the ageing sewer network does not keep rainwater and sewage apart. It describes the pollution as a recurring problem for the bay’s environment, health and tourism image, and is calling for tanks to hold water during heavy rain.
Salvem Sa Badia also asks residents and tourists to flush nothing but toilet paper. Other materials repeatedly block pipes and end up polluting the coast, it says.
