Mallorca sewage plant: €200,557 for upgrade plans
In Vilafranca de Bonany, Mallorca, €200,557 is going towards plans to expand and upgrade the sewage treatment plant — not the building work itself. The Balearic Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle announced the spending on 4 November 2026. Its water and environmental quality agency has awarded the design contract to a joint venture between Garau Ingenieros and Aquatec Soluciones Medioambientales.
Much of the plant is more than 30 years old. The ministry says changes in the wastewater it receives, together with expected population change, call for an overhaul. The plans must set out how the plant can treat more sewage while reducing nutrients and suspended solids in the treated water.
The proposed changes would replace the current treatment ponds with an activated-sludge system. They also include new equipment to prepare incoming sewage for treatment and to process the sludge left behind. A separate part of the project would renew the main sewer carrying wastewater from the town centre to the plant, with the aim of making the system more reliable.
