Sewage spill shuts Ibiza beach after pump failure
s'Arenal beach in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza, is closed on 20 September after sewage reached the bathing area. The council has banned swimming as a precaution and raised the red flag. The spill ran through the des Regueró and Buscastell streams before reaching the sea.
Sant Antoni de Portmany Council said a piece of iron had jammed a pump at a wastewater pumping station, causing the failure. It urged people not to put unauthorised objects or materials into the sewer network, where they can cause blockages and breakdowns.
Workers have repaired the fault and expect to get the pumping station running again shortly. They are also cleaning and disinfecting the affected area through hyperchlorination.
The council has urgently requested water samples for testing. The beach will stay shut until the spill has been fully cleared and the results confirm the water is safe for bathing.
