In Palma, Mallorca, experts examine on Wednesday, 21 October, how films, music and art can excuse sexual violence or challenge it. The talks take place at the Universitat de les Illes Balears campus as part of a two-day event organised by the Spanish government’s delegation in the Balearic Islands.

The speakers look at opposition to the Me Too movement, discrimination in the music industry and sexual violence in everyday language. They also discuss how pornography affects sexual and emotional lives, particularly those of young people. Speakers include philosopher Ana de Miguel and psychologist, anthropologist and musician Monty Peiró.

Researchers Nerea Barjola and Bárbara Tardón are due to present Después del silencio, a study described as the first to examine the impact of sexual violence on the film and audiovisual industries. It comes from Spain’s Ministry of Equality and the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media Professionals (CIMA).

The event continues on Thursday. Artists from the Balearic Islands will discuss how art can raise awareness of sexual violence, and theatre company La Azabache will perform Del amor al noPor.
