Ibiza shelter fire kills man as police probe arson

A 48-year-old man dies after a fire hits the makeshift shelter where he lives in the municipality of Sant Josep on Ibiza on Sunday. The Guardia Civil is investigating whether someone started it deliberately. An emergency call at around 07.10 reported a fire in the wooded area where the shelter stood.

Two ambulances arrived, one equipped for advanced life support and the other for basic life support. Crews stabilised the man and took him to the intensive care unit of a hospital on Ibiza. Medical staff confirmed his death after 17.00. He had burns to 90 per cent of his body.

The Guardia Civil says there are indications that the fire may have been deliberate, but it is keeping all possibilities open.
