Mallorca: Palma ship-repair plan sparks traffic fears
In Palma, Mallorca, neighbours are fighting a plan to bring industrial ship-repair firms to San Carlos quay. The Sant Agustí and Cala Major residents’ association said on Monday, 28 September 2026, that the move would worsen traffic and harm their neighbourhoods and the city.
A quay with another future in mind
The Balearic Port Authority wants to change the port’s land-use plan to move the firms to the quay. The residents’ association backs the Salvem Portopí campaign and says the site would be better used as a heritage and cultural park.
The association points to the original harbour of Portopí, Castillo de San Carlos and the Torre de Señales on the quay. It says traffic in the area is already a serious problem and that industrial activity would make it worse.
Calls for green space instead
The association and Salvem Portopí want unused buildings between the castle and the signal tower removed, including the former Mallorca flour mill and prefabricated structures. They want green space in their place.
They also oppose a new Marpol waste plant beside the castle. Instead, they want industrial ship repairs at Moll Vell, as the port authority’s previous land-use plan envisaged, and a better link for walkers and cyclists between Cala Major and the proposed Portopí park.
